A very good entry of quality implements were forward to a massive turnout of buyers, for the first sale of the year. Top price of the day was a Hi Spec 200 gallon Slurry Tanker, achieving £3550, followed by a good secondhand Lime Spreader which sold to £2500.

More quality items are required for the next sale.

STORE CATTLE & WEANLINGS

Wednesday, January 13

Harrison & Hetherington had an entry of 1300 head of cattle at their Weekly Wednesday Sale, consisting of 981 Store cattle and weaners, 316 calves and 3 dairy cattle. A good entry of cattle for the time of year, trade throughout was more positive.

STORE CATTLE – A catalogued entry of 690 cattle were forward at today’s sale, these were presented to a huge ringside of purchasers for the annual Special January Show and Sale. The pre-sale show was kindly judged by Mr Anthony Skelton of Low House, Maryport who awarded first prize and Overall Champion to Messrs Telfer & Claxton, Newton High House, Hexham with their Homebred British Blue Cross Steer sired by Frenchi De La Bon Rae out of homebred British Blue Cow, this sold for £1200. The Reserve Overall went to the first prize heifer from Messrs Reed, The Knarr, Slaggyford with their Limousin cross achieving £1115.

Out with the show, the sale topped at £1270 for a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Cooper, Hallmoor, Carlisle. Messrs Batey, High Knells, Carlisle sold a Limousin to £1250 for a pen of 5 and Messrs Wilkinson, Arkleby House also sold 3 to the same price. Messrs Batey also sold top pen of Charolais steers to £1265 for three. In the heifer section Messrs Wallace, Gapshields sold a Limousin to £1175 which also received third prize in the show, Messrs Pearson, The Faulds, Wigton sold the second prize Limousin cross to £1170. The strongest Black and Whites peaked at £830 for a pen of steers from Messrs Armstrong, Great Easby, Brampton.

Harrison & Hetherington Limited held their weekly sale of calves with a smaller show of 316 forward. Stronger, smarter calves noticeably dearer on the week, however, younger plainer calves were harder to cash. Top price was £465 for a strong Limousin from FG & SM Lough, South Lough House, Stamfordham. Black and whites were slightly cheaper than last week topping at £260 for a great British Friesian from K Storr, Fir Tree Farm, Wigton.

Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A larger show of 479 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward with 24 buyers working with over 40 accounts.

CAST COWS, BULLS & OTM CATTLE: A larger show of 345 cast cows and stock bulls were presented to an ever increasing ring side of buyers which ensured all classes being 12-15p up on the week and buyers for black and white cows leaving short of requirements.

M/s Warnock & Son, Dreva Farm, Biggar run of cows topped at 185.5p for a Charolais cross purchased by Les Fell who also purchased the top overall priced Charolais cross cow selling for 774kg at 181.5p totalling £1404. M/s Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill run of cows topped at 865kg at 162.5p totalling £1405 for a Limousin cross purchased on behalf of Woolley Bros. M/s Pearson, Wavercroft sold a Limousin cross cow for 169.5p to Mr Sean McGimpsey. M/s Warnock also sold a Charolais cow for 778kg at 169.5p totalling £1318 to Les Fell. M/s Common, Low Ardley, Hexham run of outstanding cows topped at 721kg at 163.5p totalling £1178 for a British Blue cross purchased by Cleveland Meats.

Black and white cows were in great demand with M/s McDowall & Co, Rerrick Farm, Kirkcudbrightshire run of Holstein cross cows topping at 137.5p to Les Fell. M/s Fingland, Part Tarbreoch, Castle Douglas run of cows topped at 134.5p bought by Mr Andrew Hawley. M/s Wilson & Son, Bowscale Farm sold a 101 month old black and white cow for 125.5p to Mr Hawley. M/s Baxter, Park House sold a Holstein cross for 123.54p again to Mr Fell. M/s Wilson, Aldoth Farm sold a Friesian cow for 122.5p to Mr Sean McGimpsey. M/s Irving, Meinbank Farm run of Holstein cross cows topped at 863kg at 110.5p totalling £979 to Dawn Meats.

A good show of stock bulls were dearer on the week. M/s Dickinson & Son, Kirkbarrow sold the top priced British Blue cross stock bull selling for 1036kg or 142.5p totalling £1476 to Cleveland Meats. M/s Anderson & Sons, Whiskershield sold the top priced Blonde Bull selling for 966kg at 133.5p totalling £1329 to Pickstocks. M/s Whitfield, Balladoyle sold the top priced Limousin stock bull selling for 929kg at 133.5p totalling £1240 to again Cleveland Meats.

PRIME BULLS- A larger entry of 84 prime bulls were forward, with all classes sharper on the week. Top overall was superb Limousin from Messrs Hutton of Setmabanning Farm, Keswick, achieving £1787.33. Messrs Watson of Sanders Close, Brampton sold another to £1667.44. Messrs Houston of Gretna House, Gretna sold the top priced Charolais to £1669.58 and Messrs Gwynne of Castlewigg Farm, Newton Stewart sold the top priced Simmental to £1514.83. Top pence per kilo came from Messrs Graham of Kirkhouse Farm, Dumfries achieving 221.4ppk for a Limousin.

Black and whites were better bid for, and topped at £1063.34 for a Friesian from Messrs Graham of Hillhead, Canonbie, and to £1045 for a Holstein from Messrs Wilson of Lowfield, Appleby. PRIME CATTLE -A decent entry of 50 prime steers and heifers forward with a good trade achieved for all classes. Top overall was a Limousin heifers from Messrs Jenkinson of Clifton Moor, Penrith achieving £1590.68 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo of the day was again from the same vendors, achieving 237.5ppk and was purchased by Messrs Wilson, The Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle.

Steers sold to a top of £1530.05 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Cape of Kirkland Guards, Wigton, who also attained top pence per kilo of 215.5ppk and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.

More could have been easily sold.

PRIME HOGGS: The weekly sale of prime hoggs saw a larger show of 2917 forward. Trade was again sharper on the week to average 175.17ppk with an SQQ of 182.48ppk. Export weights in particular met a high demand.

The sale peaked twice at £94.30 for Texel cross hoggs , consigned by J Marshall of Hermitage, Lockerbie and M Faulder of Ewan Close, Penrith, with both lots selling to Mr Robert Skelton.

Topping the pence per kilo was LW & JM Booton & Son of Glenmaid, Dumfries with a pen of Beltex hoggs realising 233.7ppk and was purchased by Mr Andrew Dawson.

Mules topped at 383.30 for a pen of 40 from A & D Smith of Kelmore Hills, Workington, and to 173ppk from NC Marston of Millstone Moor, Cockermouth.

Hill types sold to £80.30 for Cheviots from Messrs Wilson of Woodside, Carlisle and to 198.2ppk again from Cheviots from Messrs JJ Pateron of Terrona, Langholm.

Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of store sheep.

The offering of lambs met the dearest trade seen for sometime selling to £87 for a pen of Beltex shown by Messrs Thornborough, Newbiggining Hall Farm, Penrith.

In lamb ewes were keenly sought after selling £200 for a Beltex cross ewe in lamb to the Beltex sold by Messrs AW Bell, Fitz, Aspatria.
