PENRITH: Wednesday, January 20

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,403 prime sheep, comprising of 1,896 prime hoggs & 507 cast ewes & rams.

Topping the sale on the day at 261p/kg (£107) was for a single Beltex hogg from Mr S Millman, Brackenslack and bought by Mr S Stoddart, Wigton.

Prime Lambs took another lift on the week with an average of 187p/kg being achieved, this being closest to last year’s prices.

A small gathering of lambs forward but still sold well, with many more could have been sold.

Rearing Calves

On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 91 rearing calves.

Calves topped at £372 for a Limousin bull from Messrs NM Strong, Street House purchased Messrs D Burne, Town End Farm.

Heifer calves topped at £360 for a British Blue from Turnbull Farming, Monks House which was purchased by Messrs RJ & L Raine, Ravenwood.

Penrith Bonanza Store Cattle Sale

Monday 18th January 2016

On Monday we held our Annual January Bonanza Show & Sale of Store Cattle, kindly sponsored by PFK Land Agency.

The Bonanza Sale stood up to its name attracting a full ringside of buyers from all over the country side with several new faces in action.

All classes met a strong trade considering the primestock trend especially yearling cattle which sold extremely well.

The pre-sale show was kindly judged by Mr L Bainbridge, Stokeley who awarded champion honours to Messrs Raine, Randleholme for a British Blue Heifer which later on sold for £1260 to Messrs J & J Mathers, Kelso.

Reserve Champion honours went to Messrs Tunstall, Prospect House for a Limousin bullock which later on sold for £1260 to Messrs W Robshaw & Son, Tadcaster.

On Monday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of Prime Cattle.

A small entry of Prime cattle were better to sell than expected. Prime cattle peaked at 230.5p/kg (£1468.29) to Messrs Pearson, Manor Farm for a British Blue Heifer.

Prime bulls were a similar steady trade topping at 212.5p/kg to Messrs Raine, Fog Close for a Limousin purchased by Peter Smith, Butcher of Cocklakes.

OTM Cattle

On Monday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 64 OTM Cattle.

A solid entry of cows with some good meat about today and a ring full of buyers. Bidding was competitive but in line with the national trend.

Cows peaked at 160.5p/kg for a British Blue from Messrs Edgar, Fellside. Black and Whites topped at 146.5p/kg to Messrs Fisher, Yanwath Woodhouse.
