BARROW will be celebrating St. George's Day on Wednesday, April 23, in style.
The Old Contemptibles Retirement Band will perform a St. George's Day concert in the bandstand in Barrow Park from 2 pm to 4 pm.
The programme will feature traditional English music, while a St. George's Heritage Walk, led by local historian John Murphy, will explore the oldest part of the town, from the Town Hall, Duke Street entrance, at 5pm before looking at the heritage around St. George's Square and culminating in a tour of Barrow Town Hall.
St. George's flags with the cross of St. George will be given out to children in the market and to attendees of the concert.
advertisementAnn Taylforth, Barrow town centre and festivals manager, said: "We have over many years celebrated St. Georges Day in Barrow.
"This year we are featuring the traditional English Bandstand in Barrow Park with a brass band concert, a quintessential English occupation.
"The patron saint of England is honoured in our town and the St. George's Heritage Walk will showcase the town's early development and ambitious plans for the future.
"I am sure everyone will enjoy this celebration of St. Georges Day and the opportunity to celebrate England's National Day."
Barrow Borough Council has a self-guided leaflet on the St. George's Walk and this is available from Barrow Tourist Information Centre or may be downloaded from the Council's website by following the link www.barrowbc.gov.uk/walks
