A STAVELEY beer has been named top of the pumps in a country-wide competition in its first year of production.

Hawkshead’s golden ale – Lakeland Gold – reached the final of the Champion Beer of Britain competition at the Great British Beer Festival, which took place in London. It was one of 450 beers on show at Britain’s biggest beer festival run by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) Hawkshead’s owner, Alex Brodie, said: “To get to the final on our first appearance at the GBBF was a great achievement. I see it as recognition of just how far we have come in the six years since the brewery was founded.”

Hawkshead’s golden ale has already won several gold medals at the Society of Independent Brewers’ beer competitions, including best-bottled beer in the North 2008.
