1:01pm Wednesday 27th August 2008

A NIGERIAN student has passed up a year’s paid work for the chance of volunteering at a successful not-for-profit community information centre in the Lakes.

Bello Tonga, who is studying Civil Engineering at Birmingham University, was given the option of completing a year’s work placement in his chosen career field, but has instead opted to volunteer at the Coniston Tourist Information Centre.Former Ruskin School student Rebecca Foresman has also been lending her hand at the centre.

Ms Foresman, a tourism student from Millom, completed a stint at Cumbria Tourism before joining the team in Coniston.

Coniston Tourist Information Centre, situated on Ruskin Avenue, is run by the village community and dedicated volunteers like Ms Foresman and Mr Tonga.
