VOLUNTEERS did their bit to help keep Furness tidy at a beach clean on Saturday.

Almost 40 people of all ages, turned up at Bardsea for the event, which was organised as part of the Ulverston Walking Festival.

Steve Povey, of the festival, who asked the Morecambe Bay Partnership to organise the event, said: "This has been one of the best attended events of the walking festival. The number of volunteers here is very good."

More than 30 bin bags were filled with litter, weighing in at more than 145kg.

Volunteer beach clean leader Matt Sanderson added: "We had an excellent afternoon with wonderful weather to help us.

"This time we only found one barrel of tallow from the stricken ferry Riverdance and we will pass the details on to the contractors responsible for removing it.

"The only disappointing part of the event was when two young women who had sat in their car watching the beach cleaners in action, drove off laughing and throwing litter out of their car window as they went. Some people just don't care."

The next Furness beach clean will be on Saturday 31 May, Piel Island, Barrow, and volunteers are asked to meet at Snab Point on Walney Island at 11:30 to sign in before the walk to Piel Island.

People can bring a picnic, People can park at at Wylock Marsh (SD196641), and walk along to Snab point. Meet at SD209639. This event is in partnership with StreetSafe.

To date the Partnership has worked with over 2,900 volunteers and removed over 24 tonnes of litter from the shores of Morecambe Bay.
