100 YEARS AGO
The celebration of Children’s Sunday throughout Kendal and district last weekend proved a pronounced success.
Held under the auspices of the local Workpeople’s Committee of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the event is increasing in importance year by year.
50 YEARS AGO
A lambing ewe which had been fast on a narrow ledge for four days was rescued by Ian Underhill, 26, of Bellingham Road, Kendal, a member of the town’s mountain rescue team.
In a three hour operation he was lowered 20ft down Buckbarrow Crag to reach the stricken animal.
25 YEARS AGO
Signs pronouncing that Kendal is twinned with Rinteln in Germany have appeared at the town’s boundaries this week.
The town twinning charter was officially signed in Kendal during last year’s Torchlight Procession when officials from the German market town travelled to Kendal for the ceremony.
