100 YEARS AGO - 1918
On Thursday afternoon, as John Brennan, gamekeeper, on the preserves in Foulshaw, to G.E. Wilson, Esq, of Dallam Tower, was out rabbiting in the woods, near Ulpha, one of the dogs began barking very loudly at a distance from him and would not be called off. On the gamekeeper going to the place, he found the dog had found eight large hag-worms, or vipers.
50 YEARS AGO - 1968
The increasing slaughter of sheep by traffic on the improved stretch of the A591 road over Dunmail Raise, above Grasmere, is causing alarm among the farming community. So far this year, 30 lambing ewes have died - six of them this week -and farmers feel that if nothing is done to improve the situation a serious accident is inevitable.
25 YEARS AGO - 1963
Leading firemen have warned that unless suitable volunteers are recruited by the fire service to respond to emergency calls in Grange-over-Sands then adequate cover for the town could not be guaranteed. The Gazette was told there are barely enough personnel to man the two tenders stationed there.
