100 YEARS AGO - 1918
The Waterworks Committee of the Manchester Corporation have decided to apply to the Treasury for laying the fourth line of pipes from Thirlmere to Manchester. The first pipe was brought into use in October 1894.
50 YEARS AGO - 1968
Nearly 500 railway enthusiasts travelled to Windermere on Saturday in a train drawn by the steam locomotive “Oliver Cromwell.” Many of the people awaiting the arrival of the train, one of the last passenger steam trains to travel to Windermere, believed that the Prime Minister Harold Wilson would be aboard but he had declined the invitation.
25 YEARS AGO - 1993
Opening night turned into a real drama for Kendal’s Brewery Art Centre’s new theatre. With less than three hours to curtain up on “Talking Heads,” an Alan Bennett play to launch the £700,000 theatre, staff were still talking to fire officers about whether the new theatre was fit to take its first audience.
