UNION representatives have spoken about their ‘grave concern’ for the future of Westmorland General Hospital (WGH).

As the news broke that services could be moved from the Kendal site, regional bosses hit out, calling for trust management to ‘clarify’ their position.

“Reports that services at Westmorland General Hospital could be moved to Lancaster are a matter of grave concern for local people, patients and those dedicated staff working at the hospital,” said Unite regional officer, Gail Bundy.

“Unite will be seeking clarification from the trust on exactly what its plans are, and that we expect open and honest communication with management.”

A spokesman for the British Medical Associated said: “There needs to be openness and transparency around any changes being considered to services at Westmorland General Hospital.”

Paul Foley, UNISON North West Head of Health, said: “We are worried for the future of Westmorland Hospital.

“The Morecambe Bay NHS Trust covers a large geographical area and it must ensure that it provides quality and accessible healthcare to the population it serves.”

And Jonathan Bowker, for the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) in the North West, said all three hospital sites – at Kendal, Furness and Lancaster – must be retained.
