Petition to bring radiotherapy services to Kendal

HOT on the heels of securing a chemotherapy unit in the district, Westmorland and Lonsdale's MP is striving to secure more cancer services.

Tim Farron has launched an online petition in an effort to bring radiotherapy services to the Westmorland General Hospital.

After the huge success of bringing the chemotherapy unit to the hospital in Kendal, Mr Farron is now working to bring radiotherapy services to Kendal also, saving patients a 100-mile round trip to Preston.

To show the distance that patients have to travel for treatment last year, Mr Farron walked the 44-mile route from Preston to Kendal.

He said:” We are delighted with the establishment of the chemotherapy unit at Westmorland General and the response I've seen from patients is evidence of its success, however our campaign for new health services must not stop here.

''I hope that residents respond with the same passion to stage two of our campaign, as they did regarding the petition for the chemotherapy services, by supporting and signing the new petition for a radiotherapy unit in Kendal."

The petition can be found at the address below.

I am utterly astonished that you are giving full credit to Mr Farron for securing the chemothrapy unit for Westmoreland General. I think that even he would give the credit to the hard work of officers and staff at the Trust, who initiated and fought for it before ever he was involved.

Good ole' saint Tim! When will the masses see through his tactics?

I think Tim had a key role in bringing chemotherapy services to the hospital - a nurse told me that the other day. I don't think Tim has ever claimed total credit. But he was vital in the campaign to get it.

An exaggeration, I'm afraid.

Well I am sat next to the nurse in question I quoted before and she says...and I quote 'Tim played a vital role and made sure NHS commissioners knew that the South Lakes wanted the unit and that the public backed it. He also worked behind the scenes with policy makers.' Sounds like he did a lot to me!!

As did the officers, of course.

Do it really matter "who" brought these services to WGH. Surely it is more important to build on this success and get back to being a "hospital" rather than a "Treatment Centre", at the same time thanking EVERYONE working to this end.
