Royal Society scientists bring body to life

PROFESSIONAL scientists and engineers have given primary school children in Kendal an insight into the workings of the human body during a series of interactive workshops.

Thanks to a grant by the Royal Society, the UK's national academy of science, Dean Gibson Catholic Primary School and Vicarage Park Primary School collaborated to provide students with a taste of science outside the classroom and staged a week of bioscience-themed activities.

The project, entitled What Makes Us Tick?, saw medical professionals from local hospitals and doctors' surgeries working with the children on a range of experiments, including investigating how and why heartbeat and body temperature are measured and studying how sounds are heard and recorded.

The children also worked with a speech therapist, learning about sign language. A Royal Society Partnership Grant enabled the schools to buy a diverse range of scientific equip-ment.
