SOUTH Lakeland District Council is planning to increase Council Tax by four per cent a year until 2011 - unless it can make extra money from other sources, reports Allan Tunningley.

The authority says its income must rise by this level to deliver its corporate plan and to comply with the rising cost of meeting legal and health and safety obligations.

The authority says it needs to find ways of boosting its finances after the Government indicated it would only increase the authority's grant by half a per cent in 2009-10 and 2010-11.

However, householders are being told they could avoid having to stump up the extra Council Tax if more money can be made from car parking and other charges SLDC makes.
