A KENDAL park is once again set to be play host to a two-day festival dedicated to one of the town's mythical historic heroes.

Last year, traders and residents in the Far Cross area of Kendal resurrected the Gooseholme May Fair in honour of Dickie Doodle who, legend has it, in the 12th century established the county of Doodleshire on the banks of the River Kent with himself as mayor.

The event is being organised by the Doodleshire Partnership which declared last year's inaugural festival a "great success" and this year's festivities begin with a Doodleshire Mayor Making ceremony on May 9 followed by a day of traditional games, stalls, live music and entertainments centred around Gooseholme on May 10.

The festival will close with a special service for families at St. George's Church on May 11 at 11.15am.

Outgoing Mayor of Kendal Gwen Murfin has accepted a nomination to stand as a candidate for the post of Mayor of Doodleshire, however, nominations for the post are being sought as are volunteers to help organise the event.

For details, call Michael Ryan on 01539-730334 or email doodleshirepartnership@yahoo.co.uk.
