A SCHOOL has been presented with an award for its outstanding work in the community, reports Ian Boydon.
Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron presented a silver Princess Diana Award to Stephen Wilkinson, head teacher of Queen Katherine School, Kendal, in recognition of the school's achievements in helping pupils and families to overcome difficulties and challenges.
Mr Wilkinson said the award had been a surprise and was important for the school.

"We are very careful in knowing what our students are doing in the community," he
said.
"The Princess Diana Award has given us the award because of the quality of the students we put forward.
"It is delighting when things like this come out. The most important thing is that young people get recognition for their attainment in all sorts of things other than academically.
"I am so pleased for my form tutors and heads of years because they know so much about their students that they can recognise those who are most involved in the community."
Mr Farron said the school set a good example for the country and helped to produce well-rounded individuals.
"The charity work done by Queen Katherine School sets an example, not just locally, but for the entire country," he said. "For example, in their annual Christmas campaign this year, the sixth form raised £2,260 for the Wheelchair Foundation."
"Not only that, but some of their activities, particularly sponsoring a student to use a wheelchair for a day, were fantastic for raising awareness of the issue.
"Indeed, the positive action promoted by the school does not end when the bell goes, two ex-students left Kendal early this year to teach young people - one to Africa and one to Asia.
"Obviously the charity work does not just help others, but helps the pupils become good human beings in the process."
