FLAMBOYANT colours, vibrant tunes and recycled material will bring the streets of Staveley alive this weekend.

More than 300 villagers have been busy preparing for the Brazilian-style carnival for the past two months with the help of professional artists and the event will see a sea of colour with green being the order of the day.

The event, which takes place from today (Friday) until Sunday (July 13), will feature pedal powered floats and impressive wheeled structures all made out of rubbish.

Local factories in the area have donated their waste sweet wrapper paper, beer-piping, brush bristling, spinnaker cloth, even bra strap off-cuts, which have been integrated into the carnival costumes and floats.

Friday kicks off with an evening of live entertainment with local bands at Staveley Recreation Ground from 6.30pm Creative Workshops for all the family – including costume-making, singing, animation, dance, circus skills, and much more, takes place tomorrow (Saturday) from 11am until 4pm at the Recreation Ground.

Saturday evening sees the Wearable Arts Fashion Show - an artistic extravaganza showcasing unique costumes and choreographed performances with a live band, at Staveley Village Hall from 7pm.

The carnival will come to a head on Sunday when the street parade gets under way at noon.

Staveley Carnival Co-operative was formed in January 2000 with the aim of creating an innovative and exciting arts project for Staveley and more information is available from www.staveley carnival.com
