ALMOST 50 people gathered together in Burneside tonight (Tuesday) to discuss plans to build between 120 and 160 new houses on a green field site behind Cropper's Mill.

The meeting, which was held at the Bryce Institute, was organised by Burneside Resident's Association and Burneside Parish Council to give local people a chance to air their views about the South Lakeland Development Framework.

Within the framework, which has been developed by South Lakeland District Council to plan the district's future up to the year 2025, are core strategies aimed at fulfilling a central government requirement to produce 8,800 new homes in the area.

One of the proposed sites for the new houses is in Burneside and tonight's meeting saw many passionate objections expressed by residents.

The consultation process is now underway and there will be a drop-in session held tomorrow (Wednesday) in the Westmorland Shopping centre in Kendal between 10am and 7pm.

Council officers will be present to discuss the preferred options and answer local people's questions.
