VISIT BRITAIN is offering South Lakes residents the chance to have their sporting stories read out to an international audience of billions.

The national tourist agency want to compile a list of 1001 stories about Britain to be read out while Olympic teams make their circuit of the stadium at the London 2012 opening ceremony.

The opening ceremony of the Olympics is the second-highest viewed event on television after the World Cup final. Stories from the list will be read out by BBC and NBC sports commentators on television in Britain and America.

With its lakes and fells, Cumbria is the perfect training ground for would-be sportsmen and women. Chairman of the 2012 organising committee and Olympic gold medallist, Sebastian Coe, used the Lakes to train ahead of his successes, and rumours abound that other Great British heroes have pitted themselves against its rugged terrain to get in shape ahead of the main event.

Visit Britain website manager, Justin Reid, said: "Britain is not just about London. It's about all the different regions. I'm sure we can get some stories about sports men and women that come from Cumbria or trained here read out during the ceremony."

Do you know of any sporting heroes that have used the lakes to train? Click on Add Comment to let us know.
