TRADERS in Windermere have welcomed the announcement of a provisional date for the ending of the street works that have caused widespread disruption in the town.
Contract company Carillion, which is carrying out work on the much-heralded Windermere Enhancement Scheme, has said it hopes to complete the Crescent Road phase of the project by May 25, in time for the Spring Bank Holiday.
Since work began on Crescent Road in January, traders and motorists say they have experienced traffic chaos and loss of trade caused by changes to the traffic flow in the area.
Windermere town centre manager Paul Holdsworth said that while there was no firm date for the end of the project, restoring traffic flow on Crescent Road would be an important step in the right direction.
Some of the local traders are hoping to organise a special ceremony to mark the end of the scheme.
Many traders in the Crescent Road vicinity have reported a drop in their takings during the work and some even called for a rebate in their business rates to compensate for the related drop in trade.
The enhancement scheme, which has included the installation of new paving, lighting and street furniture, is part of the £1.95 million Windermere and Bowness Masterplan.
