FOOTBALL: Appleby FC celebrated a memorable cup double last week with their first team beating Kendal County 2-0 after extra time in the final of the Westmorland League's High Sheriff's Cup, at Penrith, while the second team beat Endmoor KGR 2-0 in the Peter Daws Memorial Shield final at Kirkby Stephen.

Appleby looked the better side overall in a goalless 90 minutes at Penrith, but County rallied strongly as the final drifted into extra time.

Only 12 minutes remained when Appleby finally broke the deadlock. John Coward's long ball found Neil Dean and he brought the ball down and side-footed past Dent.

Two minutes later, Coward was brought down in the penalty box and got up to convert the spot kick and the result was settled.

Appleby boss Jock' Nugent said: "We showed self-belief to get our reward."

Appleby Reserves made it a cup-winning double for the club and joint managers Roger Thompson and David Potts with Scott Forrester and Phillip Little getting the goals at Kirkby Stephen.

Meanwhile, Ambleside United became first division champions of the Talbot Insurance Westmorland League on goal difference. Kendal County's 4-1 defeat at Wetheriggs United left long-time leaders County and Ambleside level on points, but Ambleside had a plus-11 advantage on goals to take the title.
