THE class of 1959, the first to attend Appleby Grammar School after the abolition of the 11-plus examination in the town, was reunited at the Tufton Arms Hotel.

A total of 53 of the 111 pupils who were the first to attend Appleby Grammar School after the reorganisation of the education system, attended the celebration.

Chair of the Reunion Committee Frank Bradley said: "It has been a great response to the reunion, with 53 former pupils making it to the celebration.

"We are all celebrating out 60th birthdays this year, and it seemed a good time to hold the reunion, with former pupils scattered across the world.

"The furthest away we have contacted is Australia, the West Indies and Cyprus, but unfortunately they couldn't make it. But we have had people coming from Ireland to attend."
