CONTROVERSIAL plans to build a windfarm on the hills above Old Hutton are being met with mounting opposition.
The proposal for between five and eight turbines, less than two miles from the village, has prompted fears that irreparable damage would be caused to the landscape.
Residents are so upset by the prospect of wind blades more than 120m high dominating the skyline they have formed a protest group known as A Blot - an echo of the cult 1980s TV drama, Blott On The Landscape.
Armistead Wind Farm is being proposed by the North East energy and opencast mining business Banks Developments Ltd.
The company told residents in a leaflet: "The turbines will be more modern and larger than those at the closest operational windfarm at Lambrigg and are likely to have a hub height of around 80m.".
The firm predicted the site could "potentially produce enough electricity for up to 10,000 homes . . . helping Cumbria achieve its renewable energy targets".
However, protesters claim the benefits would be "miniscule" compared to the damage to the landscape.
