HOW Lancashire are you?

This week, a Burnley pub named after dialect poet Tim Bobbin was recognised nationally by real ale group Camra thanks to a major overhaul.

Bobbin was the pseudonym of John Collier, who as well as being a caricaturist, was well-known for producing satirical poetry in the Lancashire dialect.

To celebrate the recognition of his namesake, we have come up with a list of old Lancashire words and their meanings he would have known.

How many do you know and still use?

barmcake/oven bottom - bread roll

barmpot - silly fool

brew - cup of tea

cack-handed - not skilful/practical

cakehole - mouth

charlie - a fool

chuffed - very pleased

Dither - refers to shivering or to tremble

Do or doo - party, event, fight;

Fettle - fix something

Gab - means talk (usually too much)

How do - Hello

Kecks - trousers

Lass - young female

Oreet - used when greeting someone

Reet gradely - very good

sken - to look

Ta rah - goodbye

Use yer loaf - Use your brain

Yonder - over there - some distance away
