A FORMER cricket captain has been appointed as manager of a new heritage project.

Brian Heywood, who is a former first eleven captain at Todmorden CC, will head the Lancashire League's heritage project.

Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the project will celebrate 125 years since the Lancashire Cricket League was founded.

The competition was formed on 16 March 1892 and is made up of 17 teams across the county.

Mr. Heywood said: "The project plans to explore and build awareness of how the League has grown from the region’s industrial heritage and contributed to its communities in the area."

The league chairman Mike Bibby added: ‘What better way for us to celebrate 125 years since our formation than two developments which will enhance our reputation as the best known League in the cricketing world.

"We have increased our membership to 24 clubs with two divisions and promotion and relegation, and this project to collate and preserve our vast history."
