NEW promises from Labour to boost council cash and powers have been welcomed by Blackburn with Darwen Borough deputy leader Phil Riley
At the party’s conference in Brighton yesterday Andrew Gwynne, Shadow Local Government Secretary said: “A generation of outsourcing and forced privatisation of public services, has hollowed out the capacity of our councils to deliver for our communities.
“Today I can announce Labour’s radical plan to renew faith in local services and deliver a renaissance of local government.”
He pledged that councils would be £1.5billion better off in the first year of a Labour Government.
Cllr Riley said: “This policy promises a return to local councils being able to provide the services people want, need and care about.
“This should be good news for Blackburn with Darwen and for residents throughout East Lancashire.”
Mr Gwynne said: “This will be the largest set of reforms to local government in modern times.”
He added: “It will mean empowering communities and rebuilding local institutions and local services. Because they’re our public services - and we should always put people first.”
