HOUSEHOLDS are being urged to prepare for winter.

The Oil Firing Technical Association (OFTEC), which represents the oil heating industry, is urging households across Lancashire to check their heating systems are fit for purpose.

OFTEC has created a ‘Winter Ready’ guide for households in Lancashire.

The guide, which is available online, will help households avoid problems during the cold weather whilst maximising their heating to save money on fuel bills.

Malcolm Farrow from OFTEC, commented: “With the cold weather already starting to bite, it’s important to have your heating system checked over before increased heavy use over the winter months, especially if it has not been serviced since last year.

"With the Christmas season approaching, nobody wants to be left in a cold house with no hot water waiting for an expensive emergency call out.

“Many of us also get into the habit of turning our heating on each year without checking if our needs have changed. You don’t want to waste money heating rooms that are no longer being used. All these little adjustments can really add up and help you make significant savings, meaning you can keep the heating on for longer without increasing your fuel bills.”
