YOUNGSTERS visited a local fire station to learn about the day to day work of a firefighter.

Lancashire fire crews provided a 'day out with a difference' for a number of young people who visited Blackburn Fire Station, on Byrom Street.

The day out was organised by charity organisation, Secret Santa, and the prize was one of hundreds donated to the Secret Santa appeal in the run up to Christmas.

During the experience the youngsters dressed up as little fire-fighters and climbed all over the fire engines, turning on the lights and sirens.

The attendees were given the chance to look at a stinger fire engine with extended nozzle and were given the opportunity to see how a fireman’s pole was used.

The youngsters were also given an insight into a day in the life of a real fire fighter including a staged car crash, where they saw the jaws of life cutting a car open and a house fire with simulated smoke.

All this was followed by lunch with ‘real’ fire fighter.

Lower Darwen couple, Phil and Karen Boulding, directors of the appeal, said: “When we learned of the offer from Sean Howarth at Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service it went over and above our wildest dreams.

"We were not disappointed.

"It was truly amazing.”

Fire fighter Sean Howarth, who was in attendance, said: “We were delighted to be part of the Secret Santa appeal.

"As well as the excitement of the visit, the youngsters learned the practicalities of saving lives and were given information about house fires and how to escape one.

"We also chatted about the importance of always wearing a seat belt when travelling in a car.

“We hope it was a truly educational experience and one they will remember for the rest of their lives.

“Finally, I’d like to say a big thank you to Bookers Cash and Carry in Blackburn for donating the food and to the children who all behaved impeccably.

"It was a pleasure to have them here.”
