A PROJECT to teach the art of church bell ringing starts at Blackburn Cathedral on Sunday (June 24).

It will lead up to a special commemoration to mark the centenary of the First World War Armistice in November.

Bell ringers at the cathedral will welcome anyone who wants to learn about their art, known as 'campanology'.

Would-be apprentices should join the current team in the tower to experience ringing on the 10 bells there after the main 10.30am service.

They will be given instruction in the skills of bell ringing.

Taking part could lead to them taking part in the Armistice event which it is hoped will see 1,400 new ringers nationwide honouring the memory of 1,400 bell ringers who died during the First World War.

Anyone who wishes to take part and learn how to ring bells should go to Blackburn Cathedral on Sunday or email bells@big-ideas.org to be connected to the local bell ringing teacher.

Training usually takes place once a week for one or two hours.

It takes an average or three months to learn bell ringing.

At the end of the project (November 11) all new recruits will receive a badge for participation.
