TWO more iconic planes from the Second World War will join a Spitfire in flying over Darwen’s annual 1940’ Day on Saturday.

Organiser Samantha Taylor has revealed that a Lancaster Bomber and a Hurricane fighter will join the display now expected around 1.15pm.

The aircraft will fly over over the one-twelfth size scale model of Spitfire bought by the people of Darwen in on The Green below.

Made by WEC Group apprentices it was officially unveiled in 2012 and on Saturday it will bask in the shadow of the real thing.

While the Spitfire has taken most of the publicity and glory for its role in the Battle of Britain in 1940, the Hurricane was the main workhorse of that key conflict and the aerial war between 1939 and 1945.

The Lancaster was the RAF's main heavy bomber during the latter behalf the Second World War.

Many people attending the event which lasts from 10am to 4pm people will don 1940s-themed dress.

Miss Taylor said: "I am delighted that we have no got two more famous Second Word War planes to join the Spitfire in the fly-over which will now be slightly earlier at around 1.15pm.

"These iconic aircraft will really help give the 1940's Day lift off.

"We hope the ninth Darwen 1940's Day will be one of the best ever and be a great family event for the people of Darwen and the surrounding area.

"We have packed programme of 1940's themed events and hope to see lots of people in the dress of the decade.

"We've got our fingers crossed for warm sunny weather."

The event will include live wartime music on a special stage from Poppy Holliday, Denise Morgan, and Daisy-Bell Dumsday and from strolling musicians among the crowd,

The will be several wartime military vehicles and 1940s-style Tea Dance.

There will be Punch and Judy, face-painting, a ‘Living War’ exhibition, bouncy castle, climbing wall and scout activities.

Bridge Street will host a 1940’s Petticoat Lane-style market

Cllr Roy Davies, Mayor of Darwen Town Council which is organising the event, said: "It should be a great day. Hopefully the best ever if the sun shines.

"I hope to see the Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster fly from Darwen Tower and swoop down over the celebrations in the town centre below."

The three wartime planes all come from The Royal Air Force’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.
