Thousands of Lancashire motorists in crackdown

MORE than a third of motorists stopped in a police crackdown were given verbal warnings or tickets.

In total, 4,532 vehicles, including 1,853 motorcyclists, were stopped in the county since the police BikeWatch campaign was launched in conjunction with the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety and RideSafe Bike-Safe at the beginning of April.

Out of those, 741 verbal warnings were issued to both drivers and riders, with 854 individuals receiving fixed penalty notices.

The operation saw covert tactics used, including the police helicopter and unmarked cars and bikes. Tickets were issued for reasons including minor indiscretions and more serious offences such as speeding, use of mobile phones, roadworthiness issues and careless and dangerous driving or riding.

Chief Inspector Debbie Howard said: “Last year nine motorcyclists were killed and 526 injured in Lancashire and we are determined to work together with riders, drivers and partner agencies so that we reduce this figure year on year.

“For this reason, anyone seen committing offences that are particularly careless, inconsiderate or dangerous have been and will continue to be dealt with robustly.

“We will continue to do this to reinforce road safety messages and identify drivers and riders taking unnecessary risks to both themselves and other road users.

"Motorcyclists can be particularly vulnerable and therefore the messages for bikers are clear — ride safe by wearing the appropriate gear, ensure that both your vehicle and riding meet the legally required standard and always be aware when travelling.”

What a load of tosh! This absolutely strikes of the council's desperation to get some much needed cash into their coffers and the average person like myself can see straight through their crap.

The problem here as well is that people's dislike of the police continues to increase as they use their 'covert' tactics. Who do these people think they are, the SAS? I have an idea Mrs. Chief Inspector, why not try to build better community relations through honesty and integrity rather than having to use backhanded, dishonest tactics. It's just a crazy policy and I feel bad for any of those captured by the 'Kremlin'.

And just for the coup de grace, cyclists and motorcyclists are by far and away the most dangerous road users for car drivers like myself. The number of times they've overtook me by fine margins whilst I have car a car full of children is a disgrace and is putting a whole car load of people at risk. If two-wheel road users want respect, they have to earn it like the rest of us.

All of this stinks and we can all see through it. To those in charge, take a look in the mirror and sort yourselves out....

Interesting to see that more than 40% stopped were motorcyclists when they are such a small population of our road users.

Perhaps if car drivers and motorcyclists were re tested every 5 yrs it might help to cut road traffic accidents..Espescial
ly those car drivers who think they own the road, never take into consideration other road users, think mirrors are an optional extra, and need to get so close to the vehicle in front of them to be able to read its number plate.etc etc

Love this response. This is a much better way of making roads safer rather than using covert tactics.

Why are people complaining about this?!

If you aren't committing an offence, you won't have any problems.

It's like people complaining about being given a speeding ticket or for driving whilst using your mobile...

Don't break the law and you won't be prosecuted.

It's REALLY simple.

Well said, shytalk. I've been an advocate of regular re-testing for as long as I can remember. It would create jobs and make the roads safer. Win-win.

And for the record, I also think cyclists should have to pass a road test, too.

It's not as simple as the bleating motorists. They get all the warnings they need, from normal road speed limit signs to signs warning them that there are cameras ahead and notices posted in the paper every week of where the police are going to be 'hiding'. And STILL they get caught! Duh!
Would a burglar break into a house that has a police car parked at the end of the road and is filming activity on the street? Of course not. THAT'S how thick motorists are.

If motorcyclists and boy racers did'nt have the ability to see over hills or round corners there would be less of a problem. A covert labotomy unit might also help. As for cyclists when did you see one stop at a red light! Even motorcyclists do that.

Motorcyclists using mobile phones! Blimey!
It's bad enough trying to follow an A-Z, eat a bacon butty, balance a brew on your knee, and hold the mobile to your ear whilst driving a car. But ride a bike as well?
Like I said, blimey! Whatever next?

They need to spend more time on the B6243, which is used as a race track by numerous idiots, particularly at the junction of Stonygate Lane. It's a 30mph limit there, yet someone came zooming past there at a ridiculous speed a couple of weeks ago and nearly crashed into my friend's horse. A few months ago, a speeding driver nearly ran into the back of my bike, and then swerved to miss me, narrowly missing an oncoming car.

and cyclists should pay road tax too (as well as horse-riders who use the roads)
