THREE community swimming pools in north Lancashire look set to stay open following a decision by Lancashire County Council this week.
Councillors were asked to consider closing pools at Carnforth, Hornby and Heysham in an effort to make up the large budget deficit faced by the council in the new financial year.
At a budget review meeting on Tuesday councillors decided to retain the community pools as most swimming pools in the area were privately owned and unsuitable for school use.
City councillor for Carnforth, Tony Johnson said the news was very welcome.
“At this point in time it’s not certain, but I’m delighted that councillors have listened to what people in the area think and want,” he said. “After all, they are community swimming pools and the least the city council can do is run them.”
The budget plans will be finalised at a full council meeting on March 4.
