OFF licences and supermarkets in the Lakes appear to have taken heed of a police campaign to clamp down on the sale of alcohol to under-age youngsters.

PC Kevin Robson told a meeting of Windermere Town Council that the force was "dismayed" by the results of a recent test purchase operation in Windermere and Bowness that saw four stores sell alcohol to a 15-year-old boy.

PC Robson said officers visited the shops again afterwards to inform the proprietors about what had happened.

"One of the shops dismissed the person for selling the alcohol," said PC Robson. "Another had asked the girl if she would leave and she resigned. The other two gave advice to the staff."

Mr Robson said the operation was repeated in Ambleside and Windermere when every off-licence and supermarket was visited.

"I am pleased to report that none of the stores sold alcohol to the under age person," said PC Robson. "It was a very good operation. It was quite a positive campaign."
