Bracing winds and showers are expected to hit the region again today, hammering home the unwelcome news that autumn has arrived.

Today, gusts of up to 50mph are expected over hilly areas with early showers becoming persistent by midday, forecasters said.

But the conditions should not be as severe as yesterday when violent storms and driving rain brought the disappointing summer to an abrupt end.

Yesterday, roads and rail services across South Cumbria and North Lancashire were affected by flooding.

The A670, A5921, A684, A683, A65 and several stretches of the A6 were all hit by deep surface water and passable only with care.

On the West Coast Mainline, trains between Oxenholme and Carlisle were subject to long delays due to flooding near Penrith.

A flood warning is still in place for Keswick Campsite, while Derwentwater and the rivers Brathay, Rothay and Winster are on flood alert.

Met Office forecaster Charlie Powell said: "Today will still be quite breezy and windy but we will not see the same kind of gusts we saw yesterday.

"There will be scattered showers this morning mostly in the north and west of the UK, with some heavy falls in western Scotland.

The winds are expected to die down by tomorrow but more showers are forecast.
