Fell walkers reaching the 2,949-feet summit of mighty Great Gable, part of the Lake District’s Western fells, will find a simple bronze war memorial tablet set into the rocks of the cairn.
It belongs to the Fell and Rock Climbing Club and was dedicated in 1924 in memory of 20 club members who died during the 1914-1918 war.
Each November it is the the scene of a Remembrance service.
On one of his famous guides to the Lake District fells, Alfred Wainwright wrote of the tablet: “It is a fitting place to pay homage to men who once loved to walk on these hills and gave their lives defending the right of others to enjoy the same happy freedom...”
