CRICKETERS are hoping to get an extension to their clubhouse after developers McCarthy and Stone joined Settle Cricket Club to submit an application to Craven District Council planners.

The proposal is for an extension of 33 square metres to the current clubhouse, on land off Kirkgate, which will "square off" its current 'L' shape.

The scheme is part of an agreement between the club and retirement housebuilder McCarthy and Stone, which has submitted plans for 22 apartments on land next to the cricket club and wants to put in car parking spaces.

Cricket club chairman Andrew Davidson said: "The clubhouse has had a 'dog leg' look for a long time because of funding issues in the past, so this is an opportunity to put that right and provide a better clubhouse for members and for the community. This help from the developers is very welcome."

Club officials and company representatives were scheduled to meet on Wednesday to work out details of the scheme.

McCarthy and Stone's application to build retirement homes on the site was submitted to planners in August last year, but is still waiting for approval. A spokesman for Craven District Council's planning department said that consultations were ongoing.

The company carried out a public consultation with Settle residents in May 2015.

McCarthy and Stone regional managing director Steve Secker said: “Our team of architects have designed a contemporary building, which is sympathetic to its surroundings, including the adjacent listed building. The design incorporates natural stone and other materials found in buildings throughout Settle.

“We hope that members and officers at Craven District Council will recognise the merits of the scheme when determining the application, as we believe there is a need for this type of accommodation in Settle.”
