SKIPTON MP Julian Smith invited year six pupils at Bentham Community Primary School to visit him at the Houses of Parliament.

And, despite the distance, staff and pupils alike responded with a resounding “Yes please”.

The children were accompanied by year six teacher Katherine Shepherd, who said there was a palpable sense of adventure and excitement throughout the trip.

“The Houses of Parliament are breathtaking," she said. "It was so wonderful for our children to see that our laws are discussed and made in such an important and imposing place. Everyone enjoyed the tour and we are very grateful to Julian Smith.”

It was not only the nation’s seat of Government that impressed the children.

Jacob Pochlaniak was amazed at the number of different ethnicities he saw as the group walked along to the London Eye. He was surprised to see so many families who spoke to each other in different languages, including his native Polish. And Jasmine Brennan was startled to see policemen carrying guns as she went into the Houses of Parliament.

Head teacher Catherine Boocock said that the visit had been wonderful and praised her staff for their planning and hard work on the day.

She added: “The children were amazing and behaved beautifully during every part of the adventure. We don’t claim to rival the Houses of Parliament but are happy to invite Julian Smith and the Prime Minister to visit our award-winning architectural school building and to see the work that goes on here!”
