North Yorkshire flood warning

1:59pm Saturday 27th February 2010

PARTS of North Yorkshire have been hit by flash floods and torrential rain is expected over the weekend.

Four flood warnings are now in place in the north after heavy downpours are believed to have claimed the life of a female motorist on the North Yorkshire Moors yesterday.

A 53-year-old woman from Beverley, East Yorkshire, died after being washed down the swollen Hartoft Beck at Cropton in her Landrover.

Environment Agency flood warnings are in force on the River Went, in South Yorkshire, the upper River Hull in East Yorkshire, part of the River Ouse, in North Yorkshire and Lustrum Beck, in Co Durham.

Weather forecasters said a broad band of heavy rain accompanied by strong winds would sweep across southern England starting overnight and into tomorrow, pushing northwards through the day.
