South Lakeland avoiding worst of the weather

FLOOD warnings remain in place in the north of Cumbria, but South Lakeland has avoided the worst of the weather so far.

That's the latest from the Environment Agency, which has also issued a flood warning for the River Ribble at Settle, in the Yorkshire Dales, but properties and roads have not been affected as yet.

There is surface water on the A65 between Settle and Kirkby Lonsdale, and motorists are being urged to be vigilant on the region's roads.

In Furness, a flood warning issued yesterday remains in place at the River Duddon.

The A595 at Duddon Bridge has reopened this morning but there are still delays on the road due to surface water.

Rising floodwaters forced its closure last night.

Cumbria Police said a car overturned this morning on the A591 at Thirlmere, but no-one was injured.

Mark Wilson, Ulverston district councillor, has reported that although there was standing water on fields by the town beck close to North Lonsdale Road, no flooding has taken place.

He said that homes were 'not under threat at the moment' and said that the low tide was helping to ease the situation.

Andy Brown, of the agency, said the worst of the rain had been experienced around Keswick and Cockermouth.
