POTS OF ROMANCE: Johnny Latimer and Jude Onions are going underground for their wedding
GUESTS at a Craven couple’s wedding next month will don wellies and hard hats to accompany their suits and posh frocks.
The dress code is compulsory because, before making their marriage vows, Jude Onions and Johnny Latimer, of Clapham, are to receive a blessing with a difference – inside a mountain.
On Saturday, July 30, the Clapham pair will be joined by family and friends for the underground service deep inside Ingleborough Cave, which will be led by the Rev Ian Greenhalgh.
After the blessing – underneath the second-highest mountain in the Dales – members of the wedding party will walk down to Clapham for a traditional wedding service in St James’s Parish Church.
Miss Onions, 27, and Mr Latimer, 32, are both keen cavers who love exploring the potholes of North Craven.
Miss Onions, who works as a teaching assistant in Settle as well as volunteering for the Clapham-based Cave Rescue Organisation, said: “It means a lot to us to give friends and family a little taste of what we’re so passionate about.
“It is a beautiful cave and I wanted to prove it can be a glamorous hobby.
“It’s not all about mud and cold, dark spaces.
“Johnny and I met in a cave and we met through caving, so it just seemed right.”
Miss Onions even held her hen party underground, when she celebrated her forthcoming marriage with 25 friends in Gaping Gill, one of Britain’s biggest caves.
At last month’s hen do, members of Bradford Pothole Club lowered each of the partygoers down the 334ft drop, one at a time.
Miss Onions met Mr Latimer on a Christmas expedition in Ireby Fell Cavern in the western Dales in 2007.
He proposed to her on Christmas Eve 2009 after the pair had spent the day on Ingleborough where he was trying to teach her to snowboard and ski.
The pair plan to honeymoon in Spain where they will include some caving in their trip.
