Clapham cave rescuer receives his MBE

A VOLUNTEER with the Clapham-based Cave Rescue Organisation is coming back down to earth after meeting the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

Former Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority employee Rae Lonsdale, of Settle, received an MBE for his voluntary service in North Yorkshire.

"The past few weeks have been a bit unreal,” he said. “There has been the leg-pulling and curtseying from some of my more comical acquaintances, but also congratulations from many people.”

Rae began volunteering for the YDNPA in 1967, before taking a post with Lancashire County Council in 1973, then moving to the Dales in 1975. He has been a volunteer with the Cave Rescue Organisation and has had a number of key roles since 1976.
