TWO friends have produced a cookery book utilising ingredients found on the Coast to Coast hiking route.
Lamb from the Yorkshire Dales, fish from Whitby and Cumberland sausages feature in the recipes in Elizabeth Guy and Pat Kirkbride’s book, Rambler’s Rewards.
The book follows a walk through the day, starting with hearty breakfasts, through to lunch at home or on the move, teatime treats and suggestions for supper.
The pair say the book was inspired by years of walking and holidays along the Coast to Coast route.
The friends met in the 1990s when they both worked at the Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes.
Ms Guy went on to run a deli, Humble Pie, in her home village of Askrigg. She then launched Wensleydale Foods Ltd, making additive-free food for children, where she hired Mrs Kirkbride, from Snaizeholme, near Hawes, to work for her.
Ms Guy said: “When my business went bankrupt in June 2007, Pat tried to persuade me to write a cook book. Losing a business, in my case, meant a huge loss of confidence and it was early 2009 before I finally agreed to give it a go.”
Several of the recipes came from Mrs Kirkbride’s mother, Doreen Whitehead, who is known as Queen of the Coast to Coast for her guesthouse in Keld.
The book costs £20 and is available at Castle Hill Bookshop in Richmond, and national park centres.
