This photograph shows a farmer's wife pegging out the washing on a fresh spring day at Loweswater.
There was no tumble dryer involved in the wash day at the traditional Lakeland farm.
Heavy household chores such as baking, washing, pickling and brewing were done in the down-house, a large room separated from the fire-house (or living quarters), by a corridor and partition.
