Negotiating Kendal's narrow roads

A crowd gathered to see this helicopter at Longpool A crowd gathered to see this helicopter at Longpool

We have shown photographs before of long loads trying to manoeuvre around Kendal’s narrow streets and bridges before the M6 opened, and this heavy traffic disappeared forever.

Nether Bridge was an obstacle at the south end of the town – and Longpool to the north created similar problems.

This photograph, from June 1968, show a Pickford’s low-loader attempting to negotiate the tight corner at the station approach before heading north up the A6.

This must have been a regular occurrence, but it still drew a crowd of interested onlookers. One photograph shows a helicopter on the transporter. Does anyone recall what other large loads were carried on these vehicles?
