LETTER: What a waste of money!

The Westmorland Gazette: Coins in a tree stump at Tarn Hows Coins in a tree stump at Tarn Hows

I have just returned from walking round Tarn Hows, where I was appalled to see how many tree stumps have been encrusted with coins.

Where has this ridiculous fashion come from and what do people think they are doing?

No possible purpose can be served by hammering coins into dead trees and what a waste of money!

It may only be a penny or two per person but collectively it must amount to tens, if not hundreds, of pounds.

I wonder if anyone else deplores this trend as I do.

I would certainly urge the local authorities and landowners to take whatever steps they can to stop this senseless damage to our woodland areas.

Most of the coins are 2ps, so the value isn't great. I've seen this on the coffin route footpath just beyond Rydal on the way to Grasmere. You can pull some coins out and put them in your favourite good cause's collection box. I have put some in the donation box of Rydal church. It could be worse; there's a bridge railing in Paris where people attach padlocks and take away the key. The tree has to be dead before it's soft enough to push a coin in, so the coins don't kill a living tree. It's ugly though and a bizarre form of litter. I'll take pliers with me on my next walk!
