NORTHERN CANALS by Ray Shill, £14.99 ISBN 978-1-445633190
AUTHOR and canal historian Ray Shill has produced a rich photographic record of some key northern stretches of canal, including pictures of the long disused stretch of the the Lancaster Canal from Tewitfield to Kendal.
In all there are 142 illustrations over the 96 pages, many of them in colour.
The book follows a previous title by Mr Shill - North West Canals Through Time - an acclaimed study of waterway infrastructure mainly focused around Manchester and the Peak District.
This time he ventures much further north, as far as Carlisle, and includes the Pennine waterways from west to east. Photographs from Nelson to Leeds, the Leeds and Liverpool and the canal from Rochdale to Sowerby Bridge, are also featured.
Among other books by the same author are studies of canals in both the east and west Midlands and around Merseyside.
He is a member of the Canal Historical Society.
