I recently had an arthroscopy at Westmorland General Hospital’s Day Surgery Unit at Kendal.

At a time when the NHS is constantly under fire for its failings, it is important to remind ourselves we have access to amazing skills and care and in most cases the system works well, with successful and sometimes miraculous outcomes.

My procedure was a very minor affair, but I was impressed from my first GP visit to my discharge on the day of the operation.

My GP, a trainee, listened to my story, asked helpful questions and decided I needed to see a consultant.

A 'knee man' informed me of the options and it was decided I should have an arthroscopy. And so it was that I had my operation.

The care at all levels on the Day Surgery Unit was impeccable. I left knowing exactly what had been done to me, what my problem was and what future treatment was needed. I look forward to it with confidence.

My daughter also had an operation on the same ward and reported a similar experience.
