THE annual County Show - arguably the highlight of the agricultural calendar - is over for another year.

By all accounts it was a fabulous day.

The sun shone on the showground, livestock left with both trophies and proud owners, and delicious local food was quaffed by those who had travelled from far and wide to the area.

Long may it continue, in my opinion.

However - and I can’t be alone - I’d like to make a suggestion for next year.

Between 8.15am and 11.15am a colleague and I sat in almost gridlocked traffic on the Kendal bypass as we attempted to reach the M6.

In all that time we travelled no more than three miles.

We allowed an extra hour for our journey but were still two hours late to a training session in Blackburn - which affected all the other delegates, who could not begin until we arrived.

It also affected everyone on the afternoon session, whose course began two hours later than planned.

It affected the schedule of the trainer, who had travelled to Blackburn from South Wales.

The simple fact is this: there were too many vehicles trying to get to Crooklands and it clobbered anyone stupid enough to think they might make it in or out of Kendal.

So next year I would dearly love to see a better system implemented.

I don’t have the answers, but I can only assume there must be a way of getting visitors to the ground without the chaos of last Thursday - especially when some people don’t have a choice about making a journey out of town.

However, on a positive note, my very patient colleague kept his cool as he navigated around several bad drivers.

He also listened to me warbling along to an hour of 90s classics without once telling me (a la my husband) to ‘stop that caterwauling’.

Surely for that alone he deserves a Best in Show!
