Reading the proposals of Cumbria County Council to spend £6.8million on roads in Kendal and Ulverston (Gazette, September 25, '£6.8m plan to free up roads') appears at odds with some recent decisions to withdraw subsidies on a number of bus routes then announcing a 50 per cent increase in bus times.

Cycle lanes and encouraging people to leave cars at home is all well and good in theory. In the same edition of the Gazette it states that the population of South Lakeland is ageing more than most.

Cycling and walking are not options to many older people, not all live within walking distance of Kendal town centre nor on a convenient bus route. Therefore a car is essential.

Yes, the problem of traffic needs to be addressed if, as the paper states, 2,300 new homes are to be built.

I would, however, suggest that a park and ride scheme needs to be also reconsidered, such as those established in Southport and York.

As I remarked in a previous letter, how many of those people buying one of those 2,300 homes are going to work within South Lakeland and add financial benefit to South Lakeland?
