The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North (Orbit, £7.99).

This clever novel, a mixture of thriller and science fiction, shakes up traditional narrative structure.

Chronologically challenging, it charts the first fifteen lives of protagonist Harry August, who finds that, each time he dies, he is born again on the same date as before - but with all his memories form his previous lives.

In the first part of the book I found some of the subtler 'time travelling' elements the most appealing. A soldier in Harry's troop in the his first life - before Harry is aware of his condition - dies in a French village in the Second World War. In a later life, Harry seeks out the man before the war begins and warns him not to be in that village on that day.

And Harry has multiple encounters with the love of his life - his first wife, Jenny - although she never knows he has previous knowledge of all their encounters.

But later I came to relish the main plot of the book - Harry's battle with his nemesis, Vincent, who through his desire to understand the universe in every detail is in danger of destroying it.

This is a novel packed with thought-provoking ideas. If you enjoyed The Time Traveller's Wife, you'll also love this.
