The hoary chestnut of the 10mph speed limit on Windermere has raised its head again (Gazette, October 16, 'Speed battle').
I’m sorry to say that Paul Hardman (Letters, October 30, 'Extra zones will not harm') is incorrect in saying the lake is already zoned.
At the public inquiry in the mid-90s the inspector examined the possibility of zoning the lake in great detail and decided it was not a practical option.
The situation at present is that anyone can go anywhere on the lake including power boats, both in the areas controlled by 6mph and the rest of the lake below10 mph; challenging that universal usage would be against the historical right of navigation and would require an Act of Parliament.
What the power boat users would like is an area of the lake specially set aside for their use but it is not big enough for that and I still cannot see how it would be fair on the rest of the lake users or, indeed, how it would be monitored.
